Renewable Energy: Hydro electric projects

Basic water diversion project

This project illustrates the basic components used to divert water from a small seasonal creek and get a clean and steady flow into a 3/4 inch poly pipe.

Inspiration for this project came from a hot tub I was fortunate enough to enjoy in the middleCabanas Las Bromelias built and maintain. The pool is formed in the middle of the creek by using this wooden barrel structure of a Costa Rican rain forest that the team from and captures most of the water. I'm not sure why the arc is not the other way but maybe they have their reasons. This water had minerals in it but there were other clean water sources they did tap and the principle is the same. Hold back the water and let setiment settle out by the dam and then draw water from a still, 'clean', part of the resouviuir.

There are three basic components in this process:
  • Capture the water

  • Transfer the water

  • Distribute the water
The size of pipe used in the system is subject to pressure drop from smaller diameters. The length of pipe used should be proportonate to the diameter.
